Harding township is considered to be one of the most exclusive areas in New Jersey. With a population of just over 3,000, it has one of the highest per capita incomes in the state and retains an aura of refinement and elegance. Most homes are substantial individual dwellings sitting in secluded plots of over three acres, with development carefully controlled to maintain the area’s pastoral charm.
There are a couple of more modest developments sitting along Route 202, and bungalows and cottages can be found at the community around Mount Kemble Lake. There has been very little development in recent years, and homes that have been built conform to the established style. It won’t come as a surprise that you won’t be able to find many homes in New Harding that cost less than $1 million, with the average price being in excess of $2 million.
There is very little in the way of commerce in Harding which contributes to the old world feel of the place. However, shops and restaurants can be found in neighbouring communities such as Basking ridge or Morristown which are an easy ten-minute drive away.
There is a very strong sense of community, with many local services such as the library, fire department and a first-aid team all run by local volunteers. The Harding Township School caters for students right through from kindergarten to eighth grade, after which students transfer to high performing Madison High School six miles away. Many families, however, choose to send their children to one of the private schools in the area.
Central Manhatten , 35 miles away to the east, can be reached by car in an hour or in 50 minutes by train from stations in nearby townships which are served by New Jersey Transit trains.
