Chatham is frequently rated amongst the best places to live in New Jersey. It was established in the early 18th century and sits just over 20 miles west of New York City. It’s a relatively compact town at 2.5 square miles and has a population of around 9,000. Residents love the family-centric, safe, and tight-knit community feel to the town.

The town’s old buildings, constructed during the colonial and revolutionary periods, just ooze character. Together with the large number of parks, these create a lovely atmosphere in which to live and spend time. But the town doesn’t just offer historic charm. There is a good range of shops, restaurants, sports and leisure facilities, and a commuter rail station. The town has six public schools, including Chatham Township High School which was rated in the top 10% in the country five years ago.

The town is in a great location, being within an hour’s drive from the outdoor attractions of the mountains, the coast and the Delaware River and Water Gap. Central Manhattan can be reached by car in around 40 minutes and by train from Chatham’s New Jersey Transit station in just over an hour.

The quiet neighborhoods contain attractive colonial and craftsman style homes. It is one of the state’s highest income communities and the latest median price of homes in Chatham is around $1.1M, up around 17% from last year. Along with other nearby communities, prices in Chatham are rising due to the demand from buyers looking to take advantage of home working to relocate from urban to less densely populated areas.
